Been a minute since I caught an update gonna watch this and get caught up on others

Speaking as someone who enjoyed Starfield, it freaking sucks. Terribly thought out mechanics meet an okay story in a universe that WOULD be compelling if it wasn't so static (You have to freaking atomize yourself for ANY of your choices to make ANY impact, and so what does it matter? You'll never see them! You could be a space tyrant killing so many people that all trade in the settled systems ceases to be possible, or you could be a complete hero, and nothing changes until you suicide yourself into a newgame+) I did enjoy the alien worlds, and the aliens themselves, and even a few characters (Sam Coe most particularly, if only because he finds it funny when you do typical gamer crap like shoot a gun off in a populated area or jump from an impractical height, making him by far the most likeable companion), but the main story is meh at the best of times, meanwhile the bulk of the gameplay is just watered-down Fallout 4, because at least Fallout 4 had the decency to create realistically dangerous and densely detailed environments. In the whole of the entirety of Starfield, I think Londinium was the one location where I didn't feel like I was playing the alpha version of a concept (New Atlantis is decent enough that I'm willing to call it a beta). I mean come on, the main capital of one of the major political powers in the galaxy is smaller than my highschool campus, and substantially smaller than BLOODY SOLITUDE FROM SKYRIM. I don't know why I enjoyed Starfield, but I did. I had some fun while playing it, but in the end I can't say much about it impressed me. Shipbuilding, for example, was fun until you realize that no matter what you do, the most amazing custom ship possible to build will be tactically and strategically inferior to the starter ship once you've completed the main story. There's little satisfaction in crafting or finding good gear, because you know in the back of your mind that it will all vanish as soon as you newgame+, which you MUST do fairly regularly if you ever want to upgrade your character's powers to useful levels. It saddens me because it had a good concept and a good budget, not to mention a decent release date for its project timeline. The only thing that held Starfield back from being spectacular is a total lack of top-down vision (Todd had the story written down but that's not what I mean). There was no unifying "Dream" with which to craft a cohesive gameplay experience, and so what we got was watered-down renditions of prior Bethesda gameplay achievements. Base building is fun, but unlike Fallout 4 where making a settlement has both lore and gameplay ramifications, Starfield bases do quite literally close to nothing, and are way more work for way less payoff. Crafting and cooking is cool, but unlike with Skyrim's alchemy, the created foods and drinks have such negligible effects that you have to wonder why you're even bothering (Thank you alien tea for your +4 to health. Very useful when my HP pool is almost 300). The superpowers are super neat in both concept and execution, but unlike Skyrim where your Thu'um has incredible effects and causes others to react in awe, your starborn powers rarely create so much as a gasp from your companion, and until you grind for some 20 hours, are so ineffective that you're usually better served by just doing whatever you meant to the old fashioned way. It's just a potluck of Bethesda's best gameplay hits, but every item was left out too long and got cold. It was painfully close to greatness, but truly missed the mark.
